A Visit to Jama Masjid
A visit to a historical monument is always an exciting experience. It is a fascinating adventure. I had one such experience during the last summer vacation when I visited Delhi.
With my family, I reached Delhi by train. After some rest, we undertook a visit to Delhi. Delhi is a historical city. It has been called by different names in different periods of time. On one hand, there are Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Jantar Mantar, Qutub Minar, and India Gate which narrate the glorious past of India; while Rashtrapati Bhawan, Lotus Temple, Parliament, to name a few, are the wonders of modern times.
We visited the Jama Masjid first. Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India. It is located in Old Delhi. It is located just opposite the famous Lal Quila or the Red Fort. Shah Jehan built it in the 17th century in Delhi. It is also known as Masjid-e-Jahan Numa.
The mosque was the result of the efforts of over 5,000 workers, over a period of seven years. The use of white marble, wide staircases, and arched gateways are the hallmarks of this popular mosque. The mosque has a vast paved rectangular courtyard, which is nearly 75 m by 66 m. Its courtyard has the capacity to hold nearly 25,000 worshipers. The central courtyard is accessible from the East.
By noon, we had completed the tour of Jama Masjid and returned back. I enjoyed my trip to the Jama Masjid very much. It was really an unforgettable experience which apart from being intellectually rewarding gave us a glimpse of our country’s proud history.
