Goswami Tulsidas
‘Goswami Tulsidas’ was born in 1532. Scholars differ on his year of birth and place. Some scholars consider his birthplace as Rajpur (Banda district) and some as Soron (Etah district). There is no concrete information regarding his parents. According to the materials and evidence obtained, his mother’s name was Hulsi, and his father’s name was Atmaram Dubey.
Tulsi’s childhood was spent in severe suffering. He had to live alone, separated from his parents. Initially, they used to live by begging. His guru’s name was Swami Narharidas. Tulsidas was married to Ratnavali. Through her preaching, he devoted himself to God. He traveled on many pilgrimages like Ayodhya, Kashi, Chitrakoot, etc. For a long time, he continued to sing about Lord Rama. He died in 1623.
Tulsi’s poems have only one theme- devotion to ‘Maryada Purushottam Rama’. He wrote many compositions. His famous compositions are ‘Ramcharitmanas’, ‘Vinayapatrika’, ‘Ramlila Nahchhu’, ‘Janaki Mangal’, ‘Parvati Mangal’, ‘Gitavali’, ‘Barwai Ramayana’, ‘Dohavali’, ‘Kavitavali’, ‘Hanuman Bahuk’ and ‘Vairagya Sandipani’. ‘Ramcharitmanas’ is the biggest basis of his fame and popularity. He has presented a tableau of Ram’s entire life in ‘Ramcharitmanas’. In ‘Vinayapatrika’ he has expressed his devotional spirit in melodious songs.
Tulsidas was a great poet. His ‘chaupaiyan’ and ‘dohe’ are great. Singers are blessed even today by singing them. His language is very simple. Tulsidas is called the ‘Sun’ of Hindi literature. With his talent, not only Hindu society and India but the whole world is being illuminated.
