Smt. Indira Gandhi, the only daughter of Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru was born on 19th November 1917 at Allahabad. She was a born leader because she had all the qualities of leadership right from her childhood. She received her early education at home and then went to Shanti Niketan. She went to England for higher studies. She was married to Feroz Gandhi. She had two sons—Rajiv and Sanjay.

Smt. Indira Gandhi’s political career started from her childhood when she organized the famous Vanar Sena, the army of children. She was guided by her father, the late Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru in the field of politics. Further, she _worked as the President of the Indian National Congress. She was sent to jail many times for her political activities against the British rulers.

Smt. Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India in 1966. She lost power in 1977 but she became Prime Minister again in 1980. She worked very hard for the progress of our country in all aspects. She implemented many schemes to remove poverty. She had great faith in socialism. She used to take revolutionary steps for the welfare of the backward and poor people. She endeavored hard to provide food, cloth, and residence to all her countrymen. She implemented 20 point program for the economic development of the country.

Smt. Indira Gandhi was a bold lady who freed Bangla Desh from the clutches of Pakistan in 1971. She also worked for world peace. She was honored as a World Leader also. She struggled hard for the welfare of humanity. She also fought against communalism and disintegration and tried to maintain unity in the country. Though she faced many kinds of problems yet she never lost heart. She worked more and more courageously to solve all problems. People loved her very much and named her, ‘Priya Darshini’.

Misfortune separated us from our beloved leader. She was shot dead on 31st October 1984 by her own security guards. The whole country was shocked at her sad demise. Foreign countries also expressed grief over her sudden death. we all pray to god to keep her soul in peace.
